Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy: An Online Bible Study with Dr. Joel S. Baden, Session 1, September 15, 2022.
The last three books of the Pentateuch - Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy - are among the most challenging in the Bible. From obscure rituals to the narratives of Israel in the wilderness, from the law against homosexuality to the golden rule, from Mount Sinai to the border of Canaan, these books span a wide range of genres, contents, locations, and theological positions. In these six sessions, we will make our way through this maze of material, and see how the most challenging material can also be the most rewarding.

Exodus: An Online Bible Study with Dr. Joel S. Baden, Session 1, January 10, 2022.
The Exodus is the central event for the Hebrew Bible, and for Israel’s identity. The episodes that make up this story – the enslavement of Israel, the call of Moses, the plagues, the crossing of the sea, Sinai, the Ten Commandments, the golden calf – are well known, but not always well understood. In these six sessions we will explore the Exodus – historically, literarily, theologically – and think together about where these stories come from, and how they have been used over time and across cultures.

The Dead Sea Scrolls: The Light They Shed on Judaism and Christianity with Dr. John Collins, Session 1, December 6, 2021.
The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls is widely regarded as the most important contribution of archeology to Biblical Studies in the twentieth century. The first lecture will ask, what are the Dead Sea Scrolls, who collected them? Are they the product of a marginal sect or representative of Judaism in the time of Jesus. The second lecture will consider some texts found in the Scrolls that are of special interest for Christianity, including one that speaks of a figure who is called Son of God.
